PHARMAC will fund a vaccine to protect young people from meningococcal disease from 1 December this year.
The funding covers people aged 13-24 in their first year of close-living situations, such as boarding schools’ hostels, halls of residence and military barracks. We can give this vaccine up to three months in advance. Fortunately, cases of meningococcal disease are still relatively rare, but the consequences can be extremely serious, even fatal, and we know young people in close living conditions are at great risk. Young people already resident in close-living situation will be eligible to receive one funded dose of the ACWY vaccine until 30th November 2020. Following this only those entering their 1st year will be eligible. The strains ACW and Y account for approximately half the cases of Meningococcal Disease in New Zealand, with the remainder being the B strain. You may wish to also consider this non-funded vaccine. For more information please contact the practice. If you are, or care for an eligible young person, please call for an appointment for a free vaccination.
